Edmodo

After completing the readings this week as well as reflecting on my own personal experiences in using Edmodo, three ideas that I have for using Edmodo for teaching and learning are listed below:

Idea #1 for using Edmodo

One way that Edmodo could be used to facilitate teaching and learning in the classroom, is by using Edmodo to manage a paperless classroom.  The benefits of introducing students to this type of learning are boundless.  Educators would be able to prepare and present lessons through Edmodo.  Students would be able to receive their notes, assignments, assessments, surveys, and additional resources with the click of a button.  This type of classroom setup would provide students with ongoing exposure to technology. In addition, educators could imbed lessons with activities and assignments that incorporate other Web 2.0 tools such as Prezi presentations, Evernote social notetaking, blogging, and/or Pinterest to name a few.  The greatest benefit of all is reducing the carbon footprint of schools with the creation of a paperless classroom.

Idea #2 for using Edmodo

Another way that Edmodo can be used in the classroom setting as a way of learning would include setting up a parent portal through Edmodo to keep parents involved in students’ learning.  In addition, this approach would allow educators to maintain close communication with parents regarding students’ performance, success in learning, as well as needed areas of improvement.  In order to facilitate academic learning, it is fundamental that teachers and parents work together, as a community, to ensure that all students reach their full potential and continue to stay challenged throughout the school year. The rewards for parental dedication and involvement in their child’s education may be hard to see on a day to day basis, but parental involvement can truly have a positive contribution to students’ overall academic success and educational gains down the road.

Idea #3 for using Edmodo

A final way that Edmodo can be used in teaching and learning would include the use of Edmodo to keep teachers and students connected during absences. Through the use of Edmodo, teachers and students can continue to work with each other in an attempt to increase communication between teachers and students.  Not only could this approach benefit students, but it could prove to be beneficial to teachers as well.  This approach to using Edmodo in the classroom setting would allow teachers to continue classroom lessons and assignments when teachers are out for in-service training, family emergencies, or personal/family illness.

  1. Ms. Holt, I really enjoyed your ideas on using Edmodo. I have similar ideas and they are fairly new to me, technology is something I still need to getting a better grasp on. I'ts unfortunate that my district is unable to provide me with the resources to implement this on a daily basis, but I can certainly give it an effort, which I plan to. Edmodo is a great tool for teachers and students.

  2. Melissa,
I loved the idea of having a paperless classroom! In our campus paper is a valuable treasure and will cause conflict within teachers if not managed properly. Unfortunately due to paper being scarce teachers are overprotective of it. I love the idea of having students do everything online, from note taking to quizzes and tests. This is a great idea in schools where each student is able to be given a laptop for their work. I believe here in El Paso the district that provides students with laptops is YISD. If each student has access to one the paperless classroom will be a success!

  3. Melissa,
I thought your last suggestion for teachers during absences was a wonderful way to keep the communication going. This will leave no room for excuses from anyone. Too often, people come up with all kinds of confusion over what, where, and when assignments are due. I like this idea so much.

  4. Melissa,
I also agree with Linda about students not left behind when they are absent. They can keep up with notes and assignments in the comfort of their home. Deadlines and expectations are clear and there are no more excuses about late assignments. Parents will be able to also monitor their child's grades and there will be no surprises. Teachers would be able to send assignments on a specific day so that we can be prepare lessons weeks in advance and just store them on file until they are ready to be assigned for students to do. This is going to be a very helpful resource to use in the classroom.

  5. Hi Melissa:

I think that your third idea is very important. Posting our learning targets, success criteria, and assignments for parents and missing students creates transparency and helps absent students get caught up. Students never have to worry about losing an assignment anymore. As educators we can use Edmodo for teaching and learning as a way to enhance the experiences that students have with what we would already normally be doing in our classrooms.

  6. Hi Melissa,
I really like your idea to use edmodo when students are absent. This tool will allow students to complete assignments after missing a day. Student can have a video recording of the lesson attached to the assignment. This is a great idea, hopefully it's not one that would be taken advantage of. Thank you for sharing.
